RED

COLLECTION

Uma investigação que nasce
do encontro entre
Graphic Art

An investigation born from the encounter between
Graphic Art and the chromatic architecture of
digital creative software

Conceived in 2021, Red Collection brings together a series of contemporary effigies inspired by figures that occupy a fundamental place in Alexandre Pontara's artistic imagination. The collection establishes a dialogue across distinct cultural spheres by reinterpreting architects of Brazilian Modernism, icons of popular culture, and legendary figures from Hollywood's Golden Age. The presence of Lúcio Costa, Roberto Burle Marx, and Oscar Niemeyer reflects the artist's ongoing engagement with Brazilian modernist architecture; Frida Kahlo and David Bowie embody personalities whose visual identities transcended their respective disciplines; while James Dean, Norma Jeane (Marilyn Monroe), Rita Hayworth, Gary Cooper, Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis, Rock Hudson, and Greta Garbo reveal his enduring fascination with classical cinema and the visual memory of Technicolor. Rather than portraying individuals, the works explore the symbolic power of these figures and the lasting presence of their images within cultural memory.

Each effigy is constructed through a distinctive visual grammar composed of binary code, pixels, graphic interference, glitches, and digital overlays. The image ceases to function as a representation and instead becomes a site of reconstruction, where historical references are filtered through computational language and reorganized according to a new visual logic.

The collection is defined by a deliberately restrained chromatic system. Red, black, white, and cyan form a visual vocabulary that runs throughout the series, establishing its conceptual unity. Far from being merely an aesthetic decision, this palette emerges from an investigation into the mirroring between graphic art and the chromatic systems embedded within the interfaces of digital creative software, bringing to the surface a chromatic grammar that normally remains confined to the computational environment. In some compositions, red dominates the image; in others, cyan assumes a leading role, creating distinct chromatic relationships within the same visual system.

It is as though the chromatic structures embedded in creative software interfaces emerge onto the surface of the artwork, revealing what ordinarily remains invisible. Color no longer serves a purely compositional function but exposes the visual architecture of the code underlying the digital image. The interface ceases to be merely a tool and becomes a language in itself, transforming computational logic into visual matter.

By bringing together figures from different historical periods within a unified graphic structure, Red Collection dissolves the boundaries between art, culture, and technology. These effigies no longer belong exclusively to the past; instead, they inhabit a hybrid territory where memory, digital language, and cultural heritage coexist in a continuous process of transformation.
